Why are Zhu Zhu Pets so popular?

This year for Christmas my baby brother wanted a Zhu Zhu Pet so I was gonna go out and buy him one but then I saw this article on how to find one and I guess I never realized how popular those are! What got them so popular?
Ha I think real hamsters are better even though they get all squirmy and pee in your hand, its just fun to have something to take care of:)

As far as I knew everyone has bought them up and selling them on ebay, etc. for many times that amount. Has anyone else seen them regularly priced in stores?? I’m thinking she got it confused for something else but idk??
